GCR Regulatory Interactions

The Regulatory Framework Modernization effort (under the Regulatory Development Program) supports the ART-GCR program by participating in various industry and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) interactions influencing advanced non-light water reactor (LWR) licensing through the establishment of a defined and predictable regulatory framework. This ensures that U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Research and Development (R&D) activities are appropriately aligned with addressing areas of licensing technical requirement uncertainty within the changing regulatory development.

Objectives of the Regulatory Framework Modernization effort include:

  • Providing licensing strategy support for the GCR program

  • Developing regulatory pathways that support NRC commercial licensing of GCRs

  • Providing innovative regulatory development strategies in areas such as emergency planning, staffing, and other emerging issues for the GCR industry.
